S.O.S …—… The ”Other” by Hana Vojtová & Elena Vogman
We invite you to the first of four lectures from the S.O.S (Self Other Situation) series called Other, with guests Hana Vojtová and Elena Vogman, led and curated by Ján Ballx and Boris Ondreička. The lecture will take place in the Kunsthalle Bratislava, in the exhibition space A HALL on Thursday, April 21 at 6 p.m.
S.O.S. is a series of panels on aspects of “mental health” at the Kunsthalle Bratislava and organized in collaboration with the Goethe Institute. S.O.S. curated by psychiatrist and artist Ján Ballx and curator and artist Boris Ondreička following their ongoing dialogue on the relationship between art, philosophy, ethics / politics and psychiatry, which they explore at various public events. S.O.S. it is based on an atmosphere of global urgency accelerated by the causes of pandemic isolation and finds itself surrounded by war horrors. In its S.O.S. invites experts from different disciplines to discuss these aspects together.
“The Other” as a “different” or “second” human being different from “Self” / “I” will be the framework of the first part of a series of four S.O.S .. events. Elena Vogman’s contribution will be based on her long-term project “Madness, Media, Milieus. Reconfiguring the Humanities in Postwar Europe ”. The project explores the fundamental role of the arts and media contributing to the development of psychiatric milieu. Dr. Elena Vogman is an expert in comparative literature and media, working in Berlin. The situated relationship of “I” to “another” as part of the hypothesis of ethical coemergence is the field of Hana Vojtová’s contribution. It revolves around the need to perceive relationships between oneself and the “other” and their context, and in particular how they contribute to creating and / or alleviating suffering. Mgr. Hana Vojtová is a psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, EMDR trainer and supervisor working in Trenčín.
We place “other” chronologically intentionally at the beginning of our health and mental care expedition as a platform for perceiving, understanding and exposing care.
Hana Vojtová is a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. She works in private practice with adult clients and as a trainer in psychotraumatology and EMDR. Her professional and personal life and outlook on life is influenced by psychotraumatology and Buddhist teachings. Both perspectives provide her with a meaningful view of suffering, how it repeats itself, and how it is possible to work with it and end it. Within this framework, the self, the other, and their relationships are perceived as necessarily interconnected and inseparable. Perceiving our vulnerability, conditionality, the complexity of life in the world, Vojtová has always sought to better understand (our) reality. For her, understanding is associated with compassion, and together they create responses to suffering and being (together) as they arise.
Elena Vogman is an expert in comparative literature and media. Since 2021 she has been the principal investigator of the research project “Madness, Media, Milieus. Reconfiguring the Humanities in Postwar Europe” at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. She has published on forms of visual thinking and montage, anthropology of rhythm and media, and is the author of two books: Sinnliches Denken. Eisenstein’s Eccentric Method (diaphanes, 2018) and Dance of Values. Sergei Eisenstein’s Capital Project (diaphanes, 2019). She was a visiting professor at the École normale supérieure in Paris and at the University of New York in Shanghai. She has held postdoctoral research positions at the International Research Institute for Cultural Technologies and Media Philosophy (IKKM) in Weimar and at the DFG “Rhythm and Projection” project at the Institute of General and Comparative Literature at Freie University in Berlin.
